There is a Science Behind Hypnotherapy for Anger Management

Reacting to Triggers in your Environment

Anger management is about getting yourself out of the vicious cycle of emotional addiction.Everyone reacts to the frustrating situations in their life, but some people choose to react for longer periods of time. When you choose to continue to react over and over again without pausing and questioning why the anger is there, and  how to deal with it, it becomes your identity. You become “the angry person,” “the moody girl,” The mean guy.” Now you have become your emotion. When your brain has recorded and memorized the turmoil of a negative past experience, you stay stuck in the emotion of that event physically.  This happens because chemicals are produced in your body just from the thought of the event. The consequence of a traumatic event is the emotion which becomes an unconscious, memorized response from triggers in your environment. When you think about that event, you create the same emotions in your brain and body as if the event was occurring once again. It only takes a single thought, or one reaction to some event in the external world, to activate that program in your subconscious mind.

When Anger Becomes an Addiction

The body becomes addicted to anger or any emotion the exact same way it becomes addicted to drugs because as humans, we are addicted to the chemical rush triggered by experiences. With a single thought your body can think it is re-experiencing the same traumatic event it has memorized from the past. This releases chemicals in your body causing you to feel a certain way.

Here’s a real-life example:

Perhaps your boss has unreasonable demands at work, you’re always being cut off in traffic, your partner is constantly nagging, your family expectations are too much and so on – you may end up getting overwhelmed and angry. After many years of being angry in these everyday situations, the thought becomes automatic and you have created a world of anger for yourself.  Now every time you think an angry thought, you trigger your body to make and release the chemicals of anger. The chemicals of anger saturate your body and your cells soak in anger.

Your cells have receptor sites that receive information from chemicals, so they know what to do and how to react in certain situations. When the cells are constantly being soaked in anger chemicals the cell beings to normalize itself to anger. Over time normal becomes satisfying and the receptor sites of the cells alter so they can use the anger chemical more efficiently. The result of this alteration process is that the cells become desensitized to the chemical feeling of anger and require a stronger feeling from you. So now you need to feel super angry to satisfy your unconscious addiction. When you are super angry your cells are stimulated again.

Your body is constantly creating new cells, and new cells are created from the division of old cells. Because of this progression, the “angry cells” divide and from their daughter cells receptor sites are requiring super angry chemicals to become active. This is why the anger is intense, because you have become addicted to the anger and the rush of feeling angry to feel alive.

Now when anything in your life is getting in your way, not doing what you want, presenting complication or challenge you get angry. However, because of your conditioning, your body takes this as normal. Your new normal is angry and you are unconsciously angry most of the time. In other words, you have embodied angry.

You Keep Trying to Change and It’s Not Working – Why?

Anger management is not just about managing your behavior and reaction to events. Anger management with hypnotherapy is about managing the thoughts and emotions that create the addiction of anger in the body and mind.

Anger management with hypnotherapy is overcoming yourself and reconditioning your mind and body to become a new person.

Maybe you have gotten to the stage where you are aware that you are angry and want to change this part of you. So, you start to make conscious decisions to not be angry anymore. You attempt to think more positive thoughts or not let triggers set you off. You tell yourself that you’re not going to let people or things make you feel angry anymore. In essence you try the all the things an anger management program would typically have you follow.

You find that you are staying on track and you begin to take control of your anger and are proud of your accomplishments. However, with your new way of thinking and behaving, your body’s cells are not happy. Because for so long you have conditioned them to need angry molecules to satisfy their chemical needs. Now with your new, more positive ways of thinking and behaving, you disrupt its pattern, denying it the familiar chemicals it craves and go against the underlying subconscious programming of anger.

As I said before the body becomes addicted to emotions exactly the way it becomes addicted to drugs. In the beginning stages you just need a small amount of anger or drug to be satisfied; in the next stage your cells require more anger and drug to feel normal and satisfied. By changing your feelings and intentions to be more happy, positive and peaceful your body begins to feel like it is going through a drug withdrawal.

Your body’s reaction to your thinking and feeling – Your Body has:

  • Modified cell receptor sites to reflect your mind and thinking patterns.
  • Altered the chemicals in your body so that feeling angry is a normal programmed state.
  • Maintain the chemicals of anger in the body, no matter what happens outside the body.

Because your body has maintained the chemical order of angry for so long, expressing joy, peace and love can feel difficult and unfamiliar. At a deep level your body craves the familiar, the expected and what feels normal. When you begin to implement new anger management processes into your routine the angry cells become upset. They send urgent messages to your brain and conscious mind. Also, because you are implementing the new anger management tools and techniques into your life, the angry chemicals in your body are decreasing. This makes the hypothalamus (thermostat of the body) become active and signal the body to make more angry chemicals. As the chemicals slowly circulate through your body, your body becomes irritable and impatient and that is when you start to have those nagging internal thoughts attempting to pull you off track. As soon as you start acknowledging those voices, giving into the craving, believe their message and respond with emotion, you fall into the old habit of being angry. This is why it’s so hard to change and why emotional addiction is hard to beat. Your mind and body disagree, and your thoughts and emotions are going against each other. This allows you to keep making choices based on your feelings. When you use how you feel as a way to make decisions, it’s easy to talk yourself out of change. Your thoughts and feelings are powerful. Hypnotherapy can help you take control of those thoughts and feelings, so you program your mind and body to have a new voice and new directives to follow. It is how how you think and how you feel that creates your future. You have the power to create a different future. When you break the emotional addiction of anger rooted in your past, you will no longer trigger the automated programs of your old self.

Anger affects people in 3 different ways.

The sympathetic nervous system activates and adrenaline rushes into the body. Most people know this as the fight or flight response and it stimulates:

  1. Increased heart rate
  2. Elevated blood pressure
  3. Tensed muscles.
How the body responds to anger:
Increased blood pressure
Heart palpitations
Tight chest
Headaches
Fatigue
Decisions you make when angry:
Yelling/Shouting
Threatening language
Overly dramatic language
Hostile questioning
Exaggerated language
Urge to harm self or others
Being angry can turn into:
Guilt
Shame
Anxiety
Depression
More anger

What is anger?

Anger is a normal, yet powerful emotion. It has vast levels of intensity from minor annoyance to bursting rage. People react in an angry manner when they perceive something or someone is threatening them, their family, their home or business or self-identity. Anger is often difficult to manage and may be suppressed. Anger can be healthy as it allows us to stand up for ourselves when managed properly. However, when it becomes out of control and leads to poor decisions it can affect your health, work and family relationships. Anger experienced for a long period of time and even suppressed anger has been associated with mental health problems including depression, anxiety and self-harm.

I understand it may be difficult for an angry person to step forward and seek help. Rest assured as I am very experienced working with this topic and can help guide you to the peace you seek.
